About DanM

CowsEatGrass is built around a simple idea:

The body is usually trying to solve a problem before we understand what the problem is.

My interest in metabolism, nutrition, psychology, and the mind-body connection came from years of trying to understand my own health problems, including depression, anxiety, insomnia, digestive issues, chronic stress, and injuries that never seemed to resolve properly.

After years of experimenting, researching, getting things wrong, and slowly finding my way back to better health, I became less interested in blaming foods, symptoms, hormones, or numbers in isolation.

I became more interested in asking better questions.

Why is the body doing this?

What changed?

What is it trying to protect against?

What conditions would allow it to work better?

My writing explores metabolism, sugar, stress, digestion, hormones, thyroid function, mood, inflammation, energy production, and the many ways the body adapts when it is under pressure.

I have a deep gratitude for the work and spirit of inquiry of Dr Ray Peat, PhD, whose ideas helped shape much of how I think about metabolism and health.

The name CowsEatGrass came from a story about Professor Ricardo Salvador, an expert in sustainable agriculture, who argued that cows should eat their natural diet: grass. An obvious truth, but not always a profitable one.

That idea stuck with me.

Sometimes the most obvious truths are the ones polite systems least want to hear.

If you’re comfortable questioning mainstream health advice, thinking differently, and asking what the body is trying to do rather than simply what to blame, welcome.
